Mimi Goes to The White House!

It’s true! Someone- who’s probably since been fired- let ME poke around the rooms of The White House! I read the spines of the books on the shelves, stirred my coffee with a silver spoon, and sat just feet away from First Lady Michelle Obama as she spoke about one of our nation’s biggest problems: childhood obesity. I returned to LA giddy but informed, ready to report on the accomplishments of the Let’s Move initiatives and armed with tools to continue the work.

white house, homemademimi, let's move, michelle obama, michelle villemaireBut before I get into all of that, first things first:    Continue Reading…

Must Have Tuscan Kale Salad to Go (Mason Jar Salad)

Recently, I was invited to the White House to learn about the work of Let’s Move, First Lady Michelle Obama’s initiative dedicated to helping kids and families live healthier lives. It was super exciting and yes I yarnbombed something on the sly and I will tell you all about that experience right here.

During this visit, White House executive chef Cristeta Comerford gave a demonstration on how to make healthy mason jar salads that you can prepare ahead of time and grab on the go. While she was making this salad I was not paying any attention because I was, of course, completely lost in the fantasy of having my very own personal chef. Fortunately, I have this video and a written copy of the recipe.

Just FYI, in my personal fantasy my personal chef makes personal donuts for me. But I digress. Here is the recipe for the thing that’s going to keep the doctors away.  Continue Reading…

Codependence Day

The Fourth of July is a big deal here. Like many neighborhoods across America, there’s a big parade and big barbecues and big fireworks. And in our neighborhood, the whole thing starts with a big race.Codependence Day_1

It’s a remarkable moment where it seems the entire community comes together in a Coca-Cola commercial kind of way, but the truth is, the whole day is a grind. I mean, the prepping of snacks and slathering of sunscreen, the dragging of children to and fro, dealing with lines and crowds and heat and ugh, port-o-potties…

My husband and I always end up having an argument on July Fourth. Continue Reading…

Underwood Farms

This morning I went to the doctor for my first round of food allergy testing. I am officially allergic to tuna, shrimp, almonds, tomatoes, oranges, milk and eggs (among other things). There are people all over the world right now receiving news that they have a terminal illness or that a loved one has passed, or that they didn’t get released from prison even though their attorney PROMISED they’d win on appeal, so I say this with a bit of shame but… what am I going to do without oranges??Underwood_1

I LIVE IN CALIFORNIA!

In my self-pity I took a walk down memory lane and came across these photos from our trip to Underwood Farms this summer. They reminded me of happier times. Continue Reading…
